Deerfield South: A New Affordable Housing Project to Support McPherson’s Growth

The city of McPherson is set to expand its housing options with the launch of the Deerfield South project, a new housing development. This project aims to provide affordable housing to meet the growing needs of the community. Located southeast of town, near the new baseball park, Deerfield South will offer a range of three and four-bedroom homes, specifically designed to support McPherson’s workforce and ensure the county’s continued growth.

“I believe in investing in communities, and McPherson is that place. We want to see the place grow,” said Brent Paul, Paul Property Management CEO. “Deerfield South is a critical step in that direction.”

Deerfield South is being developed on 17 acres of land, adjacent to the recently completed Deerfield Senior Homes. The project will consist of 60 lots, with plans to develop 40 homes. These homes will range from 1,200 to 1,600 square feet, with three-bedroom options available at just over 1,200 and 1,400 square feet, and four-bedroom homes at 1,600 square feet.

The project is structured to address the city’s need for affordable housing, which is crucial for retaining McPherson’s workforce. “McPherson needs to be able to hold its workforce here, and there’s only one way to do that, and that’s through affordable housing,” Paul noted.

To support this effort, the city of McPherson played a vital role in securing two significant grants from the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC). These grants provide essential funding for both infrastructure and down payment assistance, reducing the cost of homes for buyers by $80,000. The city is contributing $40,000 per home towards infrastructure through the Rural Housing Incentive District (RHID), while the KHRC grants cover an additional $40,000. The down payment assistance is scaled based on income and family size, making these homes accessible to a broader segment of the community.

“This project is about more than just building houses; it’s about strengthening our community and ensuring that McPherson continues to be a great place to live and work,” Paul said.
